The rehearsal rooms where the next Amsterdam sound is being written

Behind three steel doors in Noord, a dozen bands share one hallway, one broken coffee machine and, increasingly, one idea of what a guitar should sound like.

At ten past eight on a Thursday the hallway smells like solder and instant noodles. Somebody behind door four is playing the same bar of a song over and over, a little faster each time, until it stops sounding like a mistake and starts sounding like a hook.

Start with a room, not a trend

A scene piece works when you put the reader somewhere specific before you tell them what it means. Name the street, the door, the sound through the wall. The argument comes second.

The best thing about sharing a corridor is that you hear everyone’s mistakes. You steal the good ones.

Then make the argument

Three of the bands in this building have released singles this autumn, and all three share a habit: drums recorded in the room, vocals pushed back so far they become texture. That’s the claim. Everything after this paragraph should prove it with songs, quotes and details.

End on what happens next

A show date, a release, a question nobody in the building can answer yet. Leave the reader with a reason to come back.
